Multicultural Website!? Who cares? Why bother?
If you're in business, particularly a medium to large size enterprise but even if you're self-employed and work alone, you have to pay attention to the globalization of economies.
Nowadays, with migration trends being what they are (both legal and illegal), it's pretty hard to avoid overhearing foreign-speak in your own backyard.
Of course, if you're reading this item, I may be preaching to the converted. It needs to be stated unequivocally: Multiculturalism pays!!!
But don't just take my word for it. In a book that I use as my desktop marketing bible titled the Entrepreneur Magazine's Ultimate Small Business Marketing Guide: Over 1500 Great Marketing Tricks That Will Drive Your Business Through the Roof (published by Entrepreneur Magazine), here’s what the author James Stephenson has to say on the matter:
While your website may reach a global audience, that certainly doesn't mean that a global audience will understand your website or what it says. Unless of course you take the steps necessary to give visitors from foreign lands [not to mention the visitors from foreign lands who live next door] language options for viewing your site so they will understand your message in their native tongue. Less than 25 percent of the world's population speaks fluent English, therefore expecting to appeal to foreign non-English speaking prospects in terms of marketing your website, products, or services will only work if you take steps to speak their languages so they will understand.
Fortunately there is software available that can translate your English language website into as many as 30 different languages in mere seconds and in a relatively easy procedure. One of the more popular language translation software programs is SYSTRAN. SYSTRAN has many language translation options available to meet a wide range of user needs and applications. The software can copy your existing website into various selected languages or you can display different languages right alongside the English on each web page in your site. An added benefit is the fact that their software will also translate incoming and outgoing e-mail messages and personal documents into the language of choice and includes a spelling dictionary function to ensure minimal typos.
Of course, there are other quality software translation tools available and all of them are featured or reviewed in these pages. Moreover, language translation software is not the be all and end all solution to bridging the linguistic divide. But it's a good starting point. When it comes to reaching out for multicultural business, just making the effort is a good faith demonstration that you are at least interested in reaching out to a broader audience.
